“A World within a Teapot”—Dedicated to the 10th Anniversary of Peking University Alumni Association of Malaysia
Lin Jianhua(Former Chancellor of Peking University)
Peking University, originally known as the Imperial University of Peking, stands as the sole enduring accomplishment of the Hundred Days'Reform. Throughout its century-long journey, our university has remained steadfast in its commitment to social reform, living by the adage, “if you renew yourself for one day, you can renew yourself daily and continue to do so”.
Kang Youwei, a pivotal figure in the reform movement, journeyed across the Malay Peninsula after 1900. In Seremban, he penned the emotive and heroic lines, “logs abandoned by the seashore, soon were drifted by the ocean waves, reaching higher heights”.This deep-seated sentiment endures, as one can find this poem engraved on a large stone at the Kek Lok Temple in Penang, reminding people not to forget their homeland. A decade later, Gu Hongming, a Penang native, proudly assumed the role of a professor at Peking University. Another decade on, Guan Zhenmin, a graduate of the Imperial University of Peking, decided to settle down in Penang as a Chinese educator and ultimately became a literary icon in Southeast Asia.
Peking University is often referred to as “the Peking University of the world”, not solely for its educational and research prowess but also for its spirit of inclusivity. The Malaysian student community at Peking University boasts deep roots that are intertwined with the university's campus life, cultivating a spiritual connection that continually evolves and elevates.
Since diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia were established in the 1970s, the number of Malaysian students at Peking University has grown year by year since the mid-1990s, especially peaking from the 2010 onward. Consequently, Peking University Alumni Association of Malaysia was founded in Kuala Lumpur in 2013. Although the association started with a small membership and limited experience, its members have since then continually reinforced ties between their alma mater and Malaysian cultural and educational sectors, and acted as a bridge for cultural and academic exchanges between the two nations. In 2015 and 2017, two board members were honored with the Outstanding Alumni by the university, while in 2019, the association was awarded the Outstanding Alumni Organization.
In June 2016, I had the privilege of attending the Association of Pacific Rim Universities(APRU)Presidents'Meeting. There I was most grateful for the unwavering support and assistance from the Malaysian alumni association and the opportunity it provided for me to forge enduring friendships with Malaysian alumni.A particularly unforgettable experience was the “Gathering of Peking University People·Taste of Southeast Asian Tea” event, meticulously organized by the alumni association in collaboration with the Malaysian tea community. Surrounded by coconut palms and banana leaves, we indulged in tea and stimulating conversations in a truly unique atmosphere.
Chinese tea culture has permeated every corner of the globe, blossoming into a myriad of tea-drinking customs. Laozi's words embody China's traditional wisdom:“Way-making gives things life. Yet does not manage them.It assists them. Yet makes no claim upon them.It rears them. Yet does not lord it over them. It is this that is called profound efficacy.”(translated by Roger Ames)Today, Peking University alumni are distributed worldwide, and they continue to utilize their local resources and advantages to innovate for the common good of humanity. In doing so, Peking University achieves its “inclusiveness”, becoming “the Peking University of the world”.
At the elegant tea gathering beneath the sweltering equatorial sun, we savored the vast universe contained within a teapot, suddenly realizing that the multidimensional social tapestry of Nanyang(Southeast Asia)is what nurtured a wealth of creative thought in this region. This is akin to the bold spirit Kang Youwei embraced when he ventured south, leaving the seashore behind to flourish even more. This is the spirit of Peking University Alumni Association of Malaysia manifested throughout its ten years' journey, that is, though resources are limited being a young organization, it is able to come together in cohesiveness and explore further grounds, thus achieving greatness. The teapot is small while embracing an endless universe, isn't this what it refers to?
Since its establishment in 2013,Peking University Alumni Association of Malaysia has continuously overcome numerous challenges to forge new paths, whether in terms of member activities or societal service—especially in facilitating channels of communication between the alma mater and Malaysian cultural and educational sectors. This has created new opportunities and promoted “the spirit of renewal” we so value at Peking University. For instance, in 2016, the first Boya Forum was held, uniting more than ten Malaysian cultural and educational organizations to invite Professor Lin Yifu from Peking University for a monumental economic lecture, which has fostered exchanges between PKU and various sectors in Malaysia and further opened up avenues and ideas for Sino-Malaysian economic cooperation. Moreover, two Malaysia-China Islamic and Confucian Youth Cultural Exchange Summits were held in 2016 and 2019 in Qufu and Kuala Lumpur as well as Malacca respectively, leveraging the unique advantages of the Malaysian alumni association to facilitate dialogue between two of the world's great cultures, contributing wholeheartedly to a Community of Common Destiny.Additionally, efforts to promote the “PKU Southeast Asian Association”“South-South Cooperation in the Asian New Era Forum”“Sister School Agreement between Hin Hua High School and the Affiliated High School of Peking University”“Boya Young Talent Cultivation Program”“Public Health Lectures”“Joining Hands for Our Destiny, Fighting against Covid-19”, and so on, reflect the alumni association's courageous spirit in facing challenges head-on at the very forefront and holding fast to its social ideals.
The year of 2023 marks the 10th anniversary of the founding of Peking University Alumni Association of Malaysia. A special commemorative edition will be published to showcase its various endeavors and stories throughout the years. The title of this book “Southern Branch Evermore Blooms”, symbolizes the early blossoming of Chinese plums of the southern branch, representing the historical mission and ambition of Peking University students to ask, “If not me, who?” The southern branch also implies the connection between the alumni association and the alma mater, intertwined like branches and roots.
Here, I sincerely congratulate Peking University Alumni Association of Malaysia on the publication of this special edition marking its 10th anniversary. I hope that you will continue to strive for the blossoming of the southern branches and further illuminate and promote the spirit of Peking University.
